Hey Doc, let me ask you a question: Do you remember the 1980′s? Remember how science and computers were all the rage? You didn’t have to know anything about how either one worked, but you could create beautiful women or launch a global nuclear war with just a couple of keystrokes and a modem that knew how to dial anything. It was a time of fantasy, greenlighted by coked up Hollywood execs and paid for by horny teenagers at the local drive-in. God, I miss those days. Thankfully, the other night I took home “Frankenhooker” (available now from Synapse Films) and got my twisted 80′s fix. *It should be noted that while Beyond the Marquee does not encourage the use of illegal narcotics, watching this movie might make you feel like you’ve just smoked crack.* Read more

Cameron Crowe (“Say Anything”, “Jerry Maguire”) is the master of romantic comedy. Very few directors can pull off that perfect emotional blend of sadness and humor that turns an audience to putty in his hands. But as we know, nobody’s perfect and Crowe’s last narrative film, 2005′s “Elizabethtown” was a critical and box office flop. His latest effort, “We Bought a Zoo” (now available in a Blu-Ray + DVD combo from 20th Century Fox) is definitely a step in the right direction, but is this Zoo worth the price of admission?

I’m pretty sure it’s an impossible mission to discuss spy franchises without even thinking about the timeless James Bond movies. However, since 1996 Tom Cruise has given us a series that has not only been as commercially successful as the 007 flicks, but are every bit as fun as any license to kill. On April 17, Paramount Home Media Distribution (finally!!!) releases “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol”, a fourth glimpse at Ethan Hunt and his unachievable goals. Read more
WAR HORSE: Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades (Blu-Ray Review)
*** Originally published on Beyond the Marquee, 04/02/12 ***
Nine months ago in the Hollywood Hills, there was a great big orgy. Many A-listers were in attendance much to the chagrin of their publicists and the booze was an endless river that fueled the night (and much of the next day). That fateful evening, a threesome gave way to a pregnancy and on April 3rd, the spawn of Saving Private Ryan, Forrest Gump and Black Beauty will be delivered in the maternity ward of your Blu-ray player. He shall be named “War Horse”. Read more
