PAIN & GAIN (Film Review)

Pain & Gain teaser poster

PAIN & GAIN in theaters now from Paramount Pictures

Anyone familiar with weight lifting scenes in movies has no doubt heard the mantra “No pain, no gain!”  Some might argue this could be Michael Bay’s personal mission statement as he’s gained quite a bit for himself by inflicting pain on the intelligence of moviegoers everywhere for nearly two decades.  Personally, I don’t mind his films with their hyper-active visuals and no-brainer storylines, as they’ve set the standard for what has become the modern American popcorn movie.  This weekend, his latest Summer blockbuster, “Pain & Gain” opens… one week before the Summer movie season actually begins. Maybe Paramount wants to see men pumping iron before Iron Man pumps all the cash out of next week’s box office? Read more

WASTED ON THE YOUNG (DVD Review)

WASTED ON THE YOUTH available now on DVD from Indomina Releasing

Sometimes it seems like our world is spiraling out of control. Schools and theaters are getting shot up, public places are being bombed in the name of religion and teenagers are getting gang raped by their peers before pictures of the atrocity are passed around on facebook faster than a joint at a DMB concert. Yes, you could argue that ancient Rome was worse, but I didn’t live then/there nor would I want to.  These are strange times we live in and modern technology connects all of us weirdos together, for better or worse, in ways the world has never seen before. This is what makes Indomina Releasing’s “Wasted on the Young” (available now on DVD) so interesting. All the perversions found in today’s headlines are explored in a film made three years ago and half a world away… and it really hits home. Read more

REVENGE FOR JOLLY (DVD Review)

REVENGE FOR JOLLY available on DVD May 7th from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

There’s an old saying:  Never assume – you only make an ass out of u and me.  Clever. But sometimes we have no choice but to make certain assumptions or else forever be baffled.  For example,  I have to make certain assumptions about Chadd Harbold’s “Revenge for Jolly!”, coming to DVD May 7th from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.   I assume Mr. Harbold is either currently a film student or one who recently graduated.  I also assume he comes from a wealthy family or knows people with money.  Finally, I have to assume that the film’s star is full of himself and quite possibly the guy giving Harbold the money to make this movie.  But all assumptions aside, the fact is: there ain’t nothing jolly about “Jolly!” Read more

OBLIVION (Film Review)

Oblivion poster

OBLIVION in theaters now!

Some people love Tom Cruise.  Others… not so much.  I fall into the first camp, thinking that pretty much anything the guy touches will be (at least) entertaining.  My guess is that studio heads may fall into the second camp, or think the majority of people do, anyway.  How else could you explain “Oblivion”, the big-budget, sci-fi Summer blockbuster that was released in mid-April?  Helmed by “Tron: Legacy” director Joseph Kosinsky, the picture has a sleek, futuristic visual style that would’ve wowed Steve Jobs and has the biggest movie star in the world fighting space aliens.  What happened?  Why isn’t Cruise’s Jack Harper going toe-to-toe with the likes of Tony Stark, Dominic Toretto and Jay Gatsby?  Maybe because  ”Oblivion” isn’t the movie you think it is. NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN (DVD Review)

NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN availble on DVD 4/16 from Well Go USA

This past weekend was my baby nephew’s first birthday.  He lives quite a distance from me, so I’ve really only seen him three times in his 12 months of life and it’s pretty amazing how fast it goes.  When he was 4 months old, he just sort of sat there like a baby Jabba the Hut.  At 8 months, he could move his arms, albeit a bit clunky-like.  At 1 year, he can scoot around like a little race car on all fours, has a few teeth and can SCREAM like nobody’s business.  When he’s in a good mood, he’s an angel.  When he’s Mr. Grumps, I feel like scheduling a vasectomy, as I don’t think I could ever handle being a parent.  So it was fitting that I brought along “Not Suitable For Children” (available 4/16 from Well Go USA) to watch while I was there.  Because if a title describes you to a T, you’re bound to relate to the material.

And that can’t be half bad.  Right? Read more

THE FOUR (Blu-Ray Review)

The Four Blu-Ray

THE FOUR available 4/9 on DVD and Blu-Ray from Well Go USA

Asian cinema has had its influences on Western film, especially in recent years with many American horror pictures being remade from Far East offerings.  There’s something we’re fascinated with in the cultures and customs from that part of the world; it’s exciting and mystical, maybe even dangerous.  ”The Karate Kid” and “Gremlins” use this Eastern mysticism to cure Daniel-San’s busted leg and to create an army of reptilian hooligans and not once do we question it.  So imagine my surprise when I was watching “The Four” (available 4/9 on DVD and Blu-Ray from Well Go USA) and an army of the undead is raised using unquestioned Western mysticism in the form of voodoo! It made me giggle with delight as I felt like maybe, just maybe aspects of my culture are mysterious, too. I mean, I’m not surprised that America has made its mark overseas, but as if coming from a great fusion restaurant, this dish of Eastern martial-arts fantasy and Western comic book mythology is simply delectable.
