OKA! (Blu-Ray Review)

OKA cover

OKA! available 10/22 on Blu-Ray from Well Go USA

One has to be skeptical when reading that a film is based on or inspired by a true story.  It’s almost like buying juice boxes: how much of the stuff is real?  This one’s 10% juice, this one’s 20%… this one is 100%, but it’s been diluted with apple juice.  How much really occured and how much is the result of “artistic license”? There’s clearly a bit embellished upon in Lavinia Currier’s “Oka!”, coming to Blu-Ray 10/22.  Based in part on ethnomusicologist Louis Sarno’s book “Last Thoughts Before Vanishing”, the film takes us on a beautiful, humorous and sometimes trippy journey through Central Africa. In some ways it reminded me of an episode of “This American Life”… but with elephant steaks and a whole lot of smoking. Read more

THIS IS THE END (DVD Review)

this is the end dvd

THIS IS THE END available on DVD 10/1 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

It’s safe to assume that Judd Apatow has the market cornered on raunch-fest comedies with a gooey moral center. Since releasing The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Apatow’s actors have gone on to produce their own films, ranging from great (Superbad) to less-than-great (The Green Hornet)This Is the Endwritten and directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, falls squarely in the middle of that spectrum. Like a comedy-version of Soderberg’s Ocean’s Eleven, the film succeeds on the chemistry of its cast, whose madcap performances liven up the mediocre material. Read more

THE KINGS OF SUMMER (Blu-Ray Review)

THE KINGS OF SUMMER, available 9/24 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

Every September I get this feeling of dread cut through my gut. It happens whenever I see signs for “Back To School” sales. It’s been years since I’ve sat in a classroom, but there’s still some sort of psychological hold it has on me. Growing up sucks. While I now look back on my school days with fond memories, at the time there was lot of unnecessary anxiety and pressure that seemed so damn important. It wasn’t. Yet, I still get that feeling… like an amputee’s ghost pain shooting through a phantom limb. I never want Summer to end!! Well, what if it didn’t have to? On 9/24 “The Kings of Summer” will arrive on Blu-Ray and attempt to run away from responsibility, heartache and the cold autumn of adulthood. Read more

PETUNIA (DVD Review)

petunia dvd

PETUNIA coming to DVD on 9/3 from Wolfe Video

“What a tangled web we weave.” If it wasn’t a full sentence, this idiom would be the perfect title for Director/Co-writer Ash Christian’s latest film, “Petunia“. Available on DVD on 9/3, this little indie sports some razor sharp dialogue and a superb cast that delivers some of the best performances I’ve seen in awhile. If you’ve ever considered your family to be insanely dysfunctional, Christian’s Petunia clan, with all of their eccentricities and sexual hang-ups, are sure to make you feel better about the ones you love (and maybe even the ones you don’t.) In the very least, you’ll feel better about your sex life… Read more

THE ODD ANGRY SHOT (Blu-Ray Review)

Odd Angry Blu cover

THE ODD ANGRY SHOT coming to Blu-Ray and DVD on 8/13 from Synapse Films!

Admittedly, I don’t know a lot about world history.  I mean, I know a few things but I wish I knew more.  For example, I knew that America and the Vietnamese were both in the Vietnam War, but I didn’t know that Australia was fighting along side us.  I just sort of thought it was only our debacle.  Honestly, most everything I know about ‘nam is either from “Platoon“, “Apocalypse Now” or my older co-worker Ron who occasionally brings up hotboxing in a tank or smoking joints with a monkey he picked up somewhere in the jungle.  In any event, I learned something new and it’s all because of Synapse Films’ new release of “The Odd Angry Shot“, coming to Blu-Ray and DVD on 8/13.  The movie is quite different from American films dealing with the same conflict, in that it has nothing really to say politically… and that made it pretty controversial in Australia.

ISHTAR (Blu-Ray Review)

Ishtar cover

ISHTAR coming to Blu-Ray, 8/6 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

Waterworld“, “Howard the Duck“… “Caddyshack“.  These are films that were regarded as colossal flops, but in reality turned out to be… well, not so bad.  Video helped these misfits of cinema find their loving audience and even became bona fide classics (in “Caddyshack‘s” case, anyway).  It seems like every once in awhile, critics hold a secret conference to choose one film to universally gang up on.  That film will be pop culture’s go to joke until the next flop is chosen.  Sometimes it’s warranted (“Gigli“), sometimes it’s not… like in the case of “Ishtar“, finally coming to Blu-Ray on 8/6 after years of delay from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Many people have ragged on the film over the years, including Gary Larson who mocked it in a “Far Side” panel, without ever having ACTUALLY seen the movie.  Well, now’s your chance to give the film a fair shake… and it’s never looked better. CLOUDBURST (DVD Review)

Cloudburst cover

CLOUDBURST coming to DVD 7/30 from Wolfe Video

Lots of movies coming out today seem to be more about spectacle than about people.  Look no further than most of this summer’s offerings; it’s easy to wipe out an entire city block, but it’s not so easy to create characters anybody cares about.  That’s kind of the thing about road trip movies, they can be really offbeat and bizarre, but at the end of the day, if they’re going to succeed they have to be about people you want to be around.  Seriously, who really wants to be stuck on a two hour journey with Paul Walker as he struggles to read dialogue off of his palm? It also helps if the characters are fun, quirky and (most importantly) have great chemistry with each other.  ”Cloudburst“, coming to DVD July 30 from Wolfe Video, manages to hit many of the right notes, but doesn’t reach it’s destination without hitting a few speed bumps. TAI CHI HERO (Blu-Ray Review)

Tai Chi Hero BD cover

TAI CHI HERO available on Blu-Ray and DVD, 7/2 from Well Go USA!

I’m a big fan of Kung Fu movies and one of the coolest I’d seen in a long time was 2012′s “Tai Chi Zero“.  Stephen Fung’s martial arts extravaganza was infused with video game and steampunk elements that electrified the genre and found an appeal with mainstream audiences the world over.  On July 2, we go from “Zero” to “Hero”, as the second film in a planned trilogy, “Tai Chi Hero“, makes it’s way to Blu-Ray and DVD courtesy of Well Go USA.  Continuing right from where the first left off, “Hero” maintains the mood and humor of it’s predecessor while amping up the fight scenes and visual effects.  Fans of “Zero”, as well as the uninitiated are bound to have a lot of fun with this action-packed sequel. THE ASSASSIN’S BLADE (Blu-Ray Review)

assassins blade blu-ray

THE ASSASSIN’S BLADE, available now on Blu-Ray and DVD from Well Go USA!

Pretty much any way you slice it, movies are marketed with a specific audience in mind.  A movie starring Dwayne Johnson will likely be aimed at a younger male audience, while a Meryl Streep film may find a home with a more mature, female crowd.  It makes sense that you’d want to get the attention of your key demographic to maximize ticket sales, but sometimes studios stretch the truth.  They may have you believe a picture is an action packed shoot-em-up, when it’s in fact a cerebral thriller.  While it can be an attempt to “throw some ketchup” on something bland, this isn’t always the case.  Ever finish a decent movie that failed at the box-office and think ,”This would’ve done better if they’d sold it as a [whatever it really was]?  Such is the case with “The Assassin’s Blade”, available now on Blu-Ray and DVD from Well Go USA. While the trailer-cutters get it wrong, Director Jingle Ma (“Hero”, “The House of Flying Daggers”) gets it right. Read more
