In 2002, director Gore Verbinski brought us the American remake of the Japanese horror film “Ringu”. “The Ring” ended up grossing nearly $250m and became a pop culture phenomenon. Three years later, a lackluster sequel that had nothing to do with the Japanese series came and went and the franchise was barely heard from again. Until now. On June 4, Well Go USA releases “Sadako 3D” on DVD and Blu-Ray. The latest in the Japanese “Ringu” series is a wonderful frightfest that stands alone as a great horror film and makes terrifying use of the third dimension. With an eerie new twist on the original’s plot device, “Sadako 3D” breaths new life into the decade-old classic… and just might make you think twice before playing that YouTube clip being passed around on Facebook. Roughly ten years ago, I submitted an entry for the second season of “Project Greenlight”. Participants were required to judge other’s work and I remember receiving a script that stood out for all the wrong reasons. The story was about a lonely housewife who somehow meets up with a thinly-veiled Eminem and a fiery relationship begins. And I mean fiery. This thing was like a Harlequin romance novel… albeit written by a seventeen year-old learning English as a second language. It was awful, but telling. This was clearly the author’s fantasy, even if there wasn’t much of a story to hold it together. In some ways, “A Portrait of James Dean: Joshua Tree, 1951″ reminds me of this. The film, coming to DVD June 4th from Wolfe Video, blends fact and fiction to tell the tale of a pre-fame, bi-sexual James Dean – though you have to wonder how much is just the product of a fantasizing screenwriter. Pretty much everyone’s been in love before, but it’s that first time that’s the most awkward. As you mature, you’re stuck between being a child and an adult. You feel like nobody understands your situation (even though anyone with a pulse can relate) and you’re just sort of… shy about the whole thing. Not to mention the fact that you lack the maturity to do anything “right”. Now, what if you’re into the same sex? Now you’ve got to wonder if the people around you will be accepting and what if the object of your affection doesn’t feel the same attraction? Well, June is LGBT month and on the 4th Wolfe Video brings “Mosquita Y Mari” to DVD. An official selection of the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, the movie follows two Los Angeles teenagers as they fall in love for the first time. Read more

Sometimes it seems like our world is spiraling out of control. Schools and theaters are getting shot up, public places are being bombed in the name of religion and teenagers are getting gang raped by their peers before pictures of the atrocity are passed around on facebook faster than a joint at a DMB concert. Yes, you could argue that ancient Rome was worse, but I didn’t live then/there nor would I want to. These are strange times we live in and modern technology connects all of us weirdos together, for better or worse, in ways the world has never seen before. This is what makes Indomina Releasing’s “Wasted on the Young” (available now on DVD) so interesting. All the perversions found in today’s headlines are explored in a film made three years ago and half a world away… and it really hits home. Read more
There’s an old saying: Never assume – you only make an ass out of u and me. Clever. But sometimes we have no choice but to make certain assumptions or else forever be baffled. For example, I have to make certain assumptions about Chadd Harbold’s “Revenge for Jolly!”, coming to DVD May 7th from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. I assume Mr. Harbold is either currently a film student or one who recently graduated. I also assume he comes from a wealthy family or knows people with money. Finally, I have to assume that the film’s star is full of himself and quite possibly the guy giving Harbold the money to make this movie. But all assumptions aside, the fact is: there ain’t nothing jolly about “Jolly!” Read more

This past weekend was my baby nephew’s first birthday. He lives quite a distance from me, so I’ve really only seen him three times in his 12 months of life and it’s pretty amazing how fast it goes. When he was 4 months old, he just sort of sat there like a baby Jabba the Hut. At 8 months, he could move his arms, albeit a bit clunky-like. At 1 year, he can scoot around like a little race car on all fours, has a few teeth and can SCREAM like nobody’s business. When he’s in a good mood, he’s an angel. When he’s Mr. Grumps, I feel like scheduling a vasectomy, as I don’t think I could ever handle being a parent. So it was fitting that I brought along “Not Suitable For Children” (available 4/16 from Well Go USA) to watch while I was there. Because if a title describes you to a T, you’re bound to relate to the material.
And that can’t be half bad. Right? Read more
