THE LAST TYCOON (Blu-Ray Review)

THE LAST TYCOON available on Blu-Ray and DVD 9/17 from Well Go USA

It’s pretty safe to say… no, it’s very safe to say that Chow Yun-Fat is one of the biggest badasses ever to grace a movie screen. The man has well over 100 films to his credit going back to the ’70s. From his work in John Woo’s Hong Kong pictures, to more recent Hollywood blockbusters, he’s shown an international appeal that few actors are able to achieve, much less maintain. For this reason alone, Mr. Chow must have been the only choice to star in Wong Jing’s new film “The Last Tycoon”, available on Blu-Ray 9/17. Part “Casablanca”, part “Grand Theft Auto”, he plays a gangster in 1930′s Shanghai at the top of his game, exuding a ruthless calm that only comes from years of being the baddest around. This is far from Chow Yun-Fat’s first rodeo, but he’s still riding hard. Read more

AMOUR (DVD Review)

Amour DVD cover

AMOUR coming to DVD and Blu-Ray from Sony Pictures Classics on 8/20

Chances are, if you saunter into the local multiplex on any given weekend, you’ll find a schmaltzy romance engineered to raise the expectations of women everywhere.  Films where young, good-looking couples overcome the odds to find their “happily ever after”.  Of course, every now and then, a filmmaker might throw a wrinkle into the formula to keep things fresh.  But sometimes, if you’re a director like Michael Haneke, you obliterate the formula, fast-forward 50 years and take a hard, unflinching look at that couple’s unhappy ending.  You might even christen the film something ironically generic, like Amour. THE GREAT GASTBY (Film Review)

THE GREAT GATSBY in theaters now!

The worst thing in the world for a writer is “the start”; staring at that blank page and wondering how you’ll ever fill it all with words.  Never mind how you’ll fill it all with good words.  So imagine trying to adapt something like “The Great Gatsby”, one of the great American novels, for the big screen.  Sure it’s been done before (Francis Ford Coppola wrote the screenplay in 1974) with so-so results,  but how do you tackle something that big and make it good?  Well, Warner Bros. might have figured it out:  put Baz Luhrmann, the visionary behind the ultra-stylized, hyper-kinetic “Moulin Rouge!” in charge. THE ASSASSIN’S BLADE (Blu-Ray Review)

THE ASSASSIN’S BLADE, available now on Blu-Ray and DVD from Well Go USA!

Pretty much any way you slice it, movies are marketed with a specific audience in mind.  A movie starring Dwayne Johnson will likely be aimed at a younger male audience, while a Meryl Streep film may find a home with a more mature, female crowd.  It makes sense that you’d want to get the attention of your key demographic to maximize ticket sales, but sometimes studios stretch the truth.  They may have you believe a picture is an action packed shoot-em-up, when it’s in fact a cerebral thriller.  While it can be an attempt to “throw some ketchup” on something bland, this isn’t always the case.  Ever finish a decent movie that failed at the box-office and think ,”This would’ve done better if they’d sold it as a [whatever it really was]?  Such is the case with “The Assassin’s Blade”, available now on Blu-Ray and DVD from Well Go USA. While the trailer-cutters get it wrong, Director Jingle Ma (“Hero”, “The House of Flying Daggers”) gets it right. Read more

NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN (DVD Review)

NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN availble on DVD 4/16 from Well Go USA

This past weekend was my baby nephew’s first birthday.  He lives quite a distance from me, so I’ve really only seen him three times in his 12 months of life and it’s pretty amazing how fast it goes.  When he was 4 months old, he just sort of sat there like a baby Jabba the Hut.  At 8 months, he could move his arms, albeit a bit clunky-like.  At 1 year, he can scoot around like a little race car on all fours, has a few teeth and can SCREAM like nobody’s business.  When he’s in a good mood, he’s an angel.  When he’s Mr. Grumps, I feel like scheduling a vasectomy, as I don’t think I could ever handle being a parent.  So it was fitting that I brought along “Not Suitable For Children” (available 4/16 from Well Go USA) to watch while I was there.  Because if a title describes you to a T, you’re bound to relate to the material.

And that can’t be half bad.  Right? Read more
