Ever have a facebook “friend” that annoys you with everything they write? Maybe they constantly brag about their life while masking it in a complaint? For example: “I was just at the supermarket and heard a lady complaining about the brand of caviar they carry. I HATE living in Beverly Hills.” Ugh. One of the worst offenders on my friends list is a girl I went to school with who’s snobby, materialistic and a master of the passive-brag-gressive post that makes me want to throw my computer out a window. While she had nothing to do with the production of the movie, her voice was all over “Slightly Single in LA“, a film that’s as engaging as a slideshow of your neighbor’s family vacation… only “hipper”. It’s as if Writer/Director Christie Will decided to take her social media wall and reenact every post with a collection of fading 90′s stars.

SLIGHTLY SINGLE IN LA (Blu-Ray Review)
RUBY SPARKS (Blu-Ray Review)
I’m sitting here listening to The Ramones’ cover of “Baby, I Love You” by The Ronettes and I’ve got that 80′s movie feeling. Maybe you know it: kind of a butterflies in the stomach, hopelessly crushing on someone while wishing you were someone else as John Hughes chooses the perfect pop song for your life to fall apart to feeling. It’s this melancholy romanticism that will win me over every single time as long.. as it’s genuine. When I heard about Fox Searchlight’s “Ruby Sparks”, a film about a writer whose latest female character suddenly materializes as his girlfriend, I got goosebumps…. “Weird Science” and “Mannequin” goosebumps. But as much as I wanted this movie to be my perfect mashup of these two childhood favorites, it wasn’t. And really, that’s perfect in a way because those expectations for an impossible ideal are exactly what the movie warns us about. Read more
NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN (DVD Review)
This past weekend was my baby nephew’s first birthday. He lives quite a distance from me, so I’ve really only seen him three times in his 12 months of life and it’s pretty amazing how fast it goes. When he was 4 months old, he just sort of sat there like a baby Jabba the Hut. At 8 months, he could move his arms, albeit a bit clunky-like. At 1 year, he can scoot around like a little race car on all fours, has a few teeth and can SCREAM like nobody’s business. When he’s in a good mood, he’s an angel. When he’s Mr. Grumps, I feel like scheduling a vasectomy, as I don’t think I could ever handle being a parent. So it was fitting that I brought along “Not Suitable For Children” (available 4/16 from Well Go USA) to watch while I was there. Because if a title describes you to a T, you’re bound to relate to the material.
And that can’t be half bad. Right? Read more
