WHITE HOUSE DOWN (Blu-Ray Review)

white house bd cover

WHITE HOUSE DOWN available 10/29 on Blu-Ray and DVD from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

Ever since its release in 1988, “Die Hard” has been the action movie that spawned a million imitators.  It’s almost become a joke to those who pitch films… “It’s like Die Hard on an aircraft carrier!” (“Under Siege”).  There’s Die Hard in a mall (“Point Blank”), Die Hard in a prep school (“Toy Soldiers”) and even Die Hard on a mountain (“Cliffhanger”)!  Bonus points to “Executive Decision” which did Die Hard on a plane exactly 6 years after Renny Harlin did it in “Die Hard 2″.  Ok, well that was Die Hard in an airport, but still… close enough.  In any event, Roland Emmerich the man who brought us such shallow, yet enjoyable blockbusters as “The Day After Tomorrow” and “Independence Day” presents “White House Down” or Die Hard in The White House. Even if it’s not the deepest movie out there, it sure is a fun time. Read more

ONE DIRECTION: THIS IS US coming to 3D, Blu and DVD

Morgan Spurlock’s ONE DIRECTION: THIS IS US, coming to3D, Blu-Ray and DVD Dec. 17

Sometimes, searching for “bad” movies turns up a few surprises.  Case in point, I recently came across this press release for “One Direction: This Is Us”, coming to 3D Blu, Blu-Ray and DVD on Dec. 17.   I haven’t heard much of their music, but I know they’re HUGE with teenage girls. Naturally, my first thought is that these guys are the Superman 2 to Justin Bieber: where he is just one, they are five – bursting out of their British phantom zone to reek havoc on US pop culture.  Then I saw this documentary was directed by one of my favorites… Morgan “Super Size Me” Spurlock. Mind = blown.  Did he sell out or is this thing actually pretty good?  Feel free to comment if you’ve seen it, as I’m actually kind of interested in hearing some reactions.  Click “READ MORE” below for specs on the various editions being released. FROM HERE TO ETERNITY (Blu-Ray Review)

From Here blu cover

FROM HERE TO ETERNITY available now on Blu-Ray from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

Sixty (!) years ago, Columbia Pictures released Fred Zinnemann’s “From Here To Eternity”.  Based on the novel by James Jones, the picture scored thirteen Academy Award nominations and won eight of them… including Best Supporting Actor for Frank Sinatra.  It essentially resurrected Ol’ Blue Eyes’ film career, though he had to lobby awfully hard for the part.  Remember the horse head in “The Godfather”?  That was rumored to be based on Sinatra’s audition.  Is that what really happened? Who knows… but he’s good, nonetheless. See for yourself, as Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has just released “From Here To Eternity” in dazzling Hi-Definition.  If you enjoy classic movies or just want to see “The Chairman” beat Ernest Borgnine with an actual chair, this one’s worth your time. THIS IS THE END (DVD Review)

this is the end dvd

THIS IS THE END available on DVD 10/1 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

It’s safe to assume that Judd Apatow has the market cornered on raunch-fest comedies with a gooey moral center. Since releasing The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Apatow’s actors have gone on to produce their own films, ranging from great (Superbad) to less-than-great (The Green Hornet)This Is the Endwritten and directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, falls squarely in the middle of that spectrum. Like a comedy-version of Soderberg’s Ocean’s Eleven, the film succeeds on the chemistry of its cast, whose madcap performances liven up the mediocre material. Read more

THE KINGS OF SUMMER (Blu-Ray Review)

THE KINGS OF SUMMER, available 9/24 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

Every September I get this feeling of dread cut through my gut. It happens whenever I see signs for “Back To School” sales. It’s been years since I’ve sat in a classroom, but there’s still some sort of psychological hold it has on me. Growing up sucks. While I now look back on my school days with fond memories, at the time there was lot of unnecessary anxiety and pressure that seemed so damn important. It wasn’t. Yet, I still get that feeling… like an amputee’s ghost pain shooting through a phantom limb. I never want Summer to end!! Well, what if it didn’t have to? On 9/24 “The Kings of Summer” will arrive on Blu-Ray and attempt to run away from responsibility, heartache and the cold autumn of adulthood. Read more

BREAKOUT (DVD Review)

Breakout DVD cover

BREAKOUT available on DVD 9/17 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

Seriously… what ever happened to Brendan Fraser? After “Furry Vengeance”, he more or less disappeared. How bad could that movie have been?? Honestly… now I really want to find out. But in any event, the guy was in some pretty big films and then *poof* he’s banished to straight-to-videoland. Well, I actually don’t mind the him… and I’m a sucker for comebacks; I want to see a Brendan Fraser revival, damn it! Well, on 9/17 “Breakout” hits DVD courtesy of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The dramatic actioner, which was also produced by Fraser could be the first step towards bringing my hopes to fruition. Or… maybe not. Read more

THE STRANGER WITHIN (DVD Review)

the stranger within dvd cover

THE STRANGER WITHIN available on DVD, 9/3 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

When it comes to psychological thrillers, everybody wants to be Hitchcock. Director Adam Neutzsky-Wulff, begs and pleads for this comparison to be made just in the opening credits of “The Stranger Within“.  As each name shows up on the screen, it dissipates into lines that recall the opening of “Psycho“.  Even the score sounds suspiciously reminiscent of Bernard Herrmann’s famous theme, with faced-paced violins pulsing away at your ears. Unfortunately, after Al, everybody else is just a pretender to the throne and while imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, it usually just makes the end result look 2nd rate.  Not so in this case.  Neutzsky-Wulff’s movie comes off as 3rd or 4th rate at best and manages to enter that rare pantheon of films known as “So bad, they’re good.”  I’d say I managed to scratch my head maybe three times before my mind was completely blown. AT ANY PRICE (DVD Review)

AT ANY PRICE, coming to DVD and Blu-Ray on 8/27 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

AT ANY PRICE, coming to DVD and Blu-Ray on 8/27 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

There’s an old adage in the screenwriting business: “Show, don’t tell.” On that front, director Ramin Bahrani’s “At Any Price“ opens beautifully. Home movies capture the backyard barbeques and birthdays of the Whipple family, who live and work in the cornfields of Iowa. We end up seeing 20 years of exposition in a little more than two minutes. It’s a smart, effective way of handling backstory. Unfortunately, it’s about the only thing the movie does well. Read more

ISHTAR (Blu-Ray Review)

ISHTAR coming to Blu-Ray, 8/6 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

Waterworld“, “Howard the Duck“… “Caddyshack“.  These are films that were regarded as colossal flops, but in reality turned out to be… well, not so bad.  Video helped these misfits of cinema find their loving audience and even became bona fide classics (in “Caddyshack‘s” case, anyway).  It seems like every once in awhile, critics hold a secret conference to choose one film to universally gang up on.  That film will be pop culture’s go to joke until the next flop is chosen.  Sometimes it’s warranted (“Gigli“), sometimes it’s not… like in the case of “Ishtar“, finally coming to Blu-Ray on 8/6 after years of delay from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Many people have ragged on the film over the years, including Gary Larson who mocked it in a “Far Side” panel, without ever having ACTUALLY seen the movie.  Well, now’s your chance to give the film a fair shake… and it’s never looked better. DEAD MAN DOWN (Blu-Ray Review)

Dead Man Down cover

DEAD MAN DOWN coming 7/9 on Blu-Ray and DVD from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

I approach anything with the WWE Studios logo emblazoned upon it with a fair bit of caution.  ”The Marine“, “12 Rounds” and “See No Evil” are just a few examples of watchable stinkers the studio has put out over the years.  The key word here is “watchable”.  I’m not expecting John Cena playing “Hamlet“, but I will get mindless fun albeit with a fair share of eye rolls and guffaws.  But imagine my surprise to see that WWE’s latest, “Dead Man Down“, available on Blu-Ray and DVD July 9th from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, reunited “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” (original) director Niels Arden Olpev and his leading lady Noomi Rapace.  It looks like this picture comes from excellent stock… and with nary a trace of HGH to be found in the cast.  Could it be?  Could WWE finally be putting out quality films?
